TWO DESIGNER TIMELINE

An exploration of the design legacies of Alexey Brodovitch and Koichi Sato through an accordion publication. This project aims to juxtapose the 20th-century design revolution with contemporary innovation. Alexey Brodovitch was picked for his role in evolving magazine design and Koichi Sato for my admiration of his work as a poster designer. This project serves as a concise yet comprehensive presentation of the connections, influences, and circumstances that define the dynamic landscape of modern graphic design.

exploring the careers of alexey brodovitch & koichi sato

After choosing my designers, the creation of this timeline began with research. First, curating a list of 10 moments for each designer to represent the development of their careers. Then, the contextual events were selected to clearly illustrate the world that these designers were working within. Acquiring this holistic view Brodovitch and Sato's work inspired me to build the accordion using techniques that they championed in their designs.

I started the design of the timline by defining my tyopgraphic system: consistent lines and tick marks for each designer's events and soft dots for the contextual events. The timeline highlights a total of forty historical events: ten from each designer's life, ten for art/design context, and ten for general history context. For the cover, I drew from the visually stunning and typographic minimalism found in Sato's posters. Throughout his work he grabs the viewer's attention with beautiful displays of color and simple imagery that relate to the subject of his promotion. Here, I created a symbol representing every designer's most important tool: the eye.
