Fan Pier Labs is a young software engineering firm based that builds and delivers custom products for clients primarily in the Boston area. I was hired to independently redesign their visual identity and develop a new website from scratch.
Build
Design a brand and website that reaches the client’s vision for a sleek, minimalistic design that pays homage to the firm’s namesake: Fan Pier Park and the Boston Harbor. Build a well-organized website that allows for simple editing by future website managers as the website content grows.
The software firm gets its name from a small park overlooking the Boston Harbor called Fan Pier Park. Considering a number of their clients are Boston-based businesses, we decided to lean into their localized upbringing through the abstracted sailboat logomark.
One of objective of this rebrand was to visually associate FPL with the cutting edge, these engineers were seeking a dark, eye-catching, “high-tech” aesthetic that paid homage to the firm's roots in the Boston Harbor.
While itinerating on the brand, I created low-fidelity wireframes of the website’s homepage. The goal at this stage was to determine the structure of FPL’s digital sales pitch to future clients and collaborators. I then itinerated on a set of design components that could be reusable as the website and firm inevitably expands.
Once the final color palette and typography were chosen by FPL’s founder I transitioned into more detailed, high-fidelity designs while beginning to develop the website’s structure in HTML and CSS. Lastly, we tested the developed site with fellow FPL employees, fixing bugs, and implementing minimal JavaScript to help the website come alive through subtle animations.
Delivered the developed website, finalized brand assets, Linkedin banners, and the visual identity summary to Fan Pier Labs’ leadership. This individual effort now serves as foundation for the young startup’s growing professional identity in the Boston area.
